My buttons/icons are either too large and overlap one another or they are missing altogether.

Try changing your font settings from large to small. To do this please follow these instructions:

1. Go to the START button

2. Select SETTINGS

3. Select CONTROL PANEL

4. Double click on the DISPLAY icon

5. Click on the SETTINGS tab. (If you are running Windows 98 you will need to click on the ADVANCED button)

6. Change the FONT SIZE to SMALL FONTS & click on OK.
